Conflict Management

••• Conflicts in developing and transition countries threaten the security and coexistence of people and their livelihoods. They also endanger the success of development measures. Inadequate conflict management by rulers and local elites jeopardises security and peace - on a national as well as an international level. Where the state loses its monopoly on the use of force, warlords, terrorist groups, drug dealers, slave traders and arms dealers take over power. The safety and security for the population disappears, as does people's trust in the government; the social and economic structures of entire regions threaten to collapse. Conflict prevention and management therefore play a central role in promoting international peace and sustainable development.

••• We design models to balance interests and support institutions in the development of conflict management mechanisms applicable in everyday life. AGEG develops capacity building concepts and implementation strategies for peace agents and alliances that also strengthen democratic structures. We advise civil society organisations that subscribe to the principles of non-violence, conflict prevention and distributive justice. The respect for local traditions always plays a crucial role when dealing with conflict, supporting measures that promote peace and coming to terms with the effects of violence.
