Background :

For many years, the struggle against tuberculosis has been one of the most urgent and serious matters in the Pakistani health sector. Therefore, German Technical and Financial Cooperation have initiated a comprehensive Tuberculosis Control Programme which is being implemented at provincial level and follows WHO DOTS strategies. The ambitious objective is a significant reduction of mortality, morbidity and transmission of tuberculosis in the population of 28 Mio.

In this context, the GTZ-Component (implemented since 2004) deals with training of health workers, cooperation with women groups, religious leaders and private doctors, as well as technical support to the professional management of the control programme. The complementary KfW-Component’s (which started in March 2006) focus lies on the construction of laboratories and procurement of drugs, vehicles and procurement services, as well as training and private sector cooperation. Together, financial and technical cooperation support the development and distribution of IEC material such as TV documentations, pamphlets, calendars and billboards. AGEG implements both components.
